The first thing that may come to mind when the words “cosmetic surgery” are said or read is the face of an ethereal women of an undetermined age, thanks to her flawless skin and supple form. No matter what the reason a female client comes to me, the ultimate outcome is to attain a better version of herself, from the outside in. If she looks good, other good things will follow, as nobody will be focused on how old she looks.

While a generation ago, it was said “middle aged” men’s appearances were looked at as distinguished, this has changed as fitness; grooming and nutrition trends have evolved. Furthermore, ageism experienced by men may not be as new a thing as we thought. Former athletes are turning up in ads for diet programs, and men’s fashion trends are skewing younger. A decade ago, we started getting shows like, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Extreme Makeover, which made it a more mainstream concept for men to look into procedures to help them feeling at their prime. We have featured several male patients on our own television show, Doctor Lift:

Statistics certainly reflect this sea change in progress. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased by more than 106% between 1997 and 2012.  Why? For some men, there’s a growing belief that their life — their professional life at least — could depend on this, as the economy fluctuates and looking young means staying competitive in the job market.

And we’re not just talking about actors and models. Men who consider themselves “regular guys” are facing a reality that in a job marketplace where looking fit, younger, and looking “more masculine” is an unspoken requirement instead of an option, the better your chances of getting a great job or advancing in your existing career.

In other words, image isn’t everything, but it could determine if you get in the door or advance, or in your social life, get (or keep) the girl.

Across the country, some corporate types are opting for so-called “Forbes Facelift,” consisting of a necklift, eyelift, jawline recontouring, and perhaps liposuction as well. And while we’re on the subject of Father’s Day, the “mommy makeovers” have begat “daddy-do overs,” for guys who are married with kids, and got so busy balancing work and home that they added 15 or 20 pounds. These men typically go for jawline recontouring, liposuction, and a small eyelift.

According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the most common cosmetic procedures for men are liposuction, rhinoplasty (nose job), eyelid surgery, gynescomastia (removal of breast tissue), and ear shaping. Here are some examples of what we offer our male patients.

1) Jawline Recontouring injects Juvederm (a hyaluronic acid) into the jaw and chin to make it more angular and strong. He also might choose to do the same thing on the cheekbones to augment facial structure and give more definition. Recovery time is less than 24 hours.

2) Liposuction (also known as “liposculpting”) typically takes away fat from around the abdomen so as to better show off muscles and abs. The healing process may often involve drainage tubes, compression garments, and antibiotics. Recovery time is estimated at two days, but we recommend you take it easy on the boot camp workouts and other strenuous activities for a month.

3) Once associated with body builders, the Gynescomastia procedure is for anyone who has extra fatty tissue around their pectoral muscles (or, in less tactful terms, “man boobs”). It’s achieved by liposuction and/or by removing excess glandular tissue, and is currently one of the biggest trends in male plastic surgery. Recovery time is two to three days.

4) Neck lift surgery literally gives you a higher profile, in the best way possible. The procedure gets rid of any loose skin or fat in the chin, so that it helps the jaw stand out and gets rid of any “jowls.” In this procedure, incisions are made around the ear lobe or behind the ears, and then the underlying muscles are tightened and excess fat is removed. Recovery time is five to seven days

5) Lower and Upper Eye Lifts (blepharoplasty) eliminate puffiness or drooping skin around the eyes so that they look more awake and you look younger. The procedure involves very minor incisions made in the natural eyelid creases, and recovery is five to seven days.

Oxygen for Beauty: Nature’s Most Omnipresent Beauty Miracle

When it comes to re-obtaining that youthful glow, oxygen facials, treatments and products are all great ways to show your skin some extra love as well as a touch of instant gratification.

There are three things oxygen facials accomplish:

  1. Rejuvenation: The oxygen diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while enhancing overall hydration.
  1. Opulence: The application of the oxygen helps even skin tone and make your face look brighter and more luminous.
  1. Clarity: Oxygen literally adjusts the climate of your skin, calming acne while restoring moisture balance and defending against future breakouts.

While the results of oxygen facials only last a few days, there are benefits to investing in one or several treatments. If you’re planning ahead for a wedding, class reunion or other significant event, you can be assured you will look your best on a particular day. If you buy a series of facials, you will see cumulative results over the course of your series.

One of our best-selling offerings is the The Jetsetter’s Oxygen Facial (http://www.liftmd.com/procedures-services/facials-peels), which is especially beneficial for those who travel frequently or have a lifestyle that involves extensive outdoor sports activity. This 50-minute treatment starts with a deep cleansing, exfoliation and light extraction followed by a cocktail of medical grade oxygen, poly-minerals, vitamins, Hyaluronic acid and peptides, which then stimulate the collagen production and to hydrate and nourish the skin. Unlike facials at traditional spas focused on pampering, this approach is more no-nonsense and results-oriented. Nevertheless, your skin will feel quite pampered for a number of reasons.

The key ingredients are the oxygen and hyaluronic acid, a molecule that is found naturally in skin, which attracts and binds moisture, helping skin look firmer and more hydrated. The device we use to administer the Jetsetter’s Oxygen Facial as well as our oxygen add-ons looks much like a makeup-artist’s airbrush gun. Not only does it have a lovely cooling sensation, but it also emits a continuous flow of 90 to 95 percent pure oxygen under hyperbaric pressure (compared to the 18 to 21 percent naturally in our environment). This is said to enhance the absorption of the serums so you theoretically get more benefit from the ingredients.

The process takes about 50 minutes, and to extend the results, we also offer products from our oxygenating skin care line that can be used at home and on the go (http://www.liftmd.com/skincare). These include Daily O2 Optimizing Crème, a silky, hydrating and firming moisturizer with Revitalin BT™, an oxygen accelerator that heightens cell respiration, promoting healthy, glowing skin; Overnight Oxy Complex, alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acid preparation is formulated with Revitalin BT™ and herbal extracts.

Although fillers and surgeries will have longer-lasting results, the benefit of investing in an oxygen facial or series with our office (or any other) is to test us out and see how we do things on a general basis. Also, if you’re not sure if you are ready for fillers, or simply want to perk up already healthy skin, the Oxygen facial is an excellent option.

You could truly say the oxygen facial truly is a breath of fresh air. It will be written all over your face!

On the Nose Results

Screen Shot 2015-04-21 at 10.59.14 AMScreen Shot 2015-04-21 at 10.58.54 AM

From teens up through mature adults, it should come as no surprise that “the nose job” is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure after breast augmentation. After all, the nose is the physical center of the face, which means that it can draw the eye to the other features of one’s face, or distract from them. This is a huge reason why teens and young adults, according to WebMD, account for roughly half of the total number of patients undergoing the procedure.
That said, there’s more to the story than that. Within the overall rhinoplasty category, there are are aesthetic procedures to remove a bump, straighten the bridge, reshape the tip. On the more practical end, there is septoplasty (a procedure done to straighten the nasal septum, the partition between the two nasal cavities) and turbinate reduction, which corrects the problem of nasal obstruction by reducing the turbinate size and thereby decreasing airway resistance while preserving the natural function of the turbinate’s, whose function it is to clean and humidify the air as it moves through your nose into your lungs. We are also offering combination of rhinoplasty (nose) and genioplasty (chin) to provide some patients a greater look of balance within their face.

Rhinoplasty is definitely not a “one size fits all” proposition–and thank goodness our community has recognized this. There was a time, about a half-century ago, when many patients got the same type of upturned, “button” nose, and though it was smaller, the nose looked “done” and identical to others who had the procedure.

Patients also need to understand that the nose is an important organ that brings air into the lungs and facilitates your sense of smell as well as taste. It is comprised of skin, bone and cartilage, as well as many blood vessels and nerves. The function of the nose depends on anatomy and internal lining of the nose that may be affected by allergy and sinus problems. The anatomy may become compromised if there is deviation or collapse of internal structures, including the septum, internal nasal valve, turbinate enlargement and external nasal valve.

We want it to not only look good, but also not interfere with his or her breathing function or the integrity of their natural bone structure based on their ethnic and genetic make up. Our before and after photos of these procedures (http://www.liftmd.com/before-after/rhinoplasty), reflect this philosophy. Seeing is believing, especially with a practice whose patients represents Los Angeles’ wonderful cross section of global cultures and people from all walks of life.

While before and after photos offer insight into how a practice approaches rhinoplasty from a broad perspective and the individual patient’s perspective, the secret to a successful rhinoplasty starts with a complete conversation between the patient and a board certified plastic surgeon.

Although the patient’s desires are the first priority, we want to be careful to balance those desires with the most realistic expectations and procedures that will leave the patient looking natural, and even more importantly, breathing correctly. Furthermore, a patient should realize that although there will be some instant gratification, there is also a long-term commitment involved. Although there is not a lot of downtime and you can see results in less than a few months, like a lot of cosmetic procedures, the full results are typically seen in 1-2 years, while those with more complex surgery such as reconstructive procedures, advanced tip work, and thick skin will likely continue to see final results even after two years.

2015: Predictions of Top Cosmetic Surgery Trends

Screen Shot 2015-04-14 at 3.19.07 PM

In many cases, less is more, and we only have to look at the evolution of the cell phone to see how a good idea got better and smaller simultaneously–from the giant brick people carried in the 1980s to today’s small, discreet smart phones that not only place calls but do pretty much everything to make our personal and professional lives easier.

Cosmetic surgery has followed suit over the decades, with less downtime, fewer medical complications, more minimally invasive procedures and more natural looking results–all things that represents Dr.Garo Kassabian’s values as a cosmetic surgeon.

Based on the inquiries being made by clients in our practice, and in practices across the U.S., here are this year’s top trends in cosmetic surgery. All reflect the continued improvements and advances in protocols, treatments and techniques that ensure patients will ultimately get what they want–their best selves.

  • Minimally invasive techniques and procedures will continue to grow in popularity. The use of minimally invasive (Botox, fillers, photo-rejuvenation) and nonsurgical cosmetic treatments will continue to increase next year. In 2013 there was a 10 percent increase over the previous year according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
  • More men will seek cosmetic surgery to look good and stay competitive in the job market. Men are seeking surgery as a key tool to help them succeed. (According to ASAPS, men had more than one million cosmetic procedures in 2013, 9 percent of the total.)
  • The Brow Lift: Looking for that fresh, wide-eyed look without the risk of looking too stretched out or done? Enter the brow lift, which eliminates the sagging of time, as well as horizontal frown lines. http://www.liftmd.com/procedures-services/face.
  • The age group of those seeking cosmetic procedures will continue to expand to both younger and more senior patients. Younger patients realize the important role of early anti-aging intervention and older patients are staying in the workforce longer and want to look more youthful.
  • The use of autologous fat grafting will continue to expand, both in reconstructive and cosmetic contexts.
  • New and more powerful lasers with less downtime will impact treatment protocols.
  • Below the belt: Buttock augmentations and labiaplasties will continue to gain popularity, as more women will seek cosmetic surgery to enhance, correct, and modify the more intimate parts of their bodies.
  • In the U.S., ethnic minorities will continue to show a strong increase in interest in cosmetic procedures. According to ASAPS, in 2013, racial and ethnic minorities had approximately 22 percent of all cosmetic procedures
  • Jawline Contouring is on the rise, especially as procedure can be performed on both men and women, as can cheek augmentation. Looking a good ten years younger or more has never been easier, though you have to go about it with a professional who wants to improve you rather than turn you into a mannequin.
  • Topically applied Botox will begin clinical trials in the U.S. in late 2015, early 2016. (The new needle-free gel formulation of botulinum toxin called RT001.)

The Annual Swimsuit Issues

With how you look in summertime clothing and swimwear fast becoming a priority, Dr. Garo Kassabian shares his advice on the best procedures, workout routine additions and dietary suggestions to look at now.

Though winter may just be ending in the rest of the United States, summer has pretty much landed in Southern California. With that, the concern over what you’ll be looking like in your swimsuit, short shorts and sundresses may also be weighing heavy on your mind.

Chances are that many of you reading this probably felt like you’ve been caught off guard. Thanks to some of the procedures offered at LIFT md Aesthetics, however, you can be caught up in no time, and you can check some of them out at http://www.liftmd.com/procedures-services/body. That said, the sudden arrival of hot weather is also a great excuse to rethink your daily cardio and workout routine, tweaking your eating habits and swapping out your beauty products in your medicine cabinet the way you’re swapping clothes around in your closet.

  • Lipoplasty/Liposuction: If you’re close to your correct weight or have done a great job sticking to your New Years’ resolution plans, liposuction can help you finish and refine what you’ve started. When considering the procedure, take stock of any areas of localized extra fat localized in specific areas such as the hips, buttocks and abdomen.
  • Abdominoplasty: Even if you’ve cut your white flour and carb consumption down, and amped up your core (mid section) workout, the classic “Tummy Tuck” helps correct the stubborn pockets of fat still left behind. Better still, techniques for this procedure are constantly improving, reducing in less post-op downtime, and smoother, longer-lasting results.
  • Mastopexy and Mamaplasty (Breast Lifts and Breast Reductions, http://www.liftmd.com/procedures-services/breast): Sometimes, bigger isn’t always better, especially when it comes to how your bustline behaves in today’s fashionable but fickle swimwear and sundresses. Whether you’ve lost a lot of weight or are noticing post-natal changes in your body, these procedures (selected after you’ve met with me to decide the right course) are focused on creating a proportional, balanced look that’s feminine but streamlined based on your body type.
  • Summer-ize Your Beauty Body Routine: (http://www.liftmd.com/skincare): Our Cellufirm Crème and Serum will add a final layer of refinement to the work you’ve done, with our proprietary mix of European botanicals and medical grade ingredients.
  • You Are What You Eat: Would you rather be fresh, lean and colorful, or white and pasty. If you want the latter, bring more of these power foods into your diet: leafy greens, grapefruit, eggs, antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies like red bell peppers and seasonal berries; fiber rich foods like asparagus, digestive herbs like peppermint added to your iced tea (home-brewed, please) and water, salmon, Greek yogurt, and quinoa. This means cutting back on white foods such as rice, pasta and bread.
  • Exercise Your Right to a Better Body. Find out what moves you. Find your local gym or yoga studio or sign up for an Instagram challenge. Even if your idea of a workout is taking the stairs in stilettos. Anything helps, right? But start today. Swimsuit season is here!

Best Ways to Prepare for your Upcoming Surgery!

When getting ready for the big day, there is a long list of “Do’s and Don’ts” prior to surgery that are important to the process. These vary from 2 weeks before, to the day of your surgery. Here is our guide to get you prepared before you embark on your highly anticipated transformation.

1. After your consultation and the day is set, make sure you have someone available to transport you from the surgery to your home and be with you the first 24 hours. This is very important and will be essential in your recovery process.
Who wouldn’t want to be waited on for a day anyway?

2. Two weeks prior you want to cut off medicines that could cause complications during surgery. An example would be aspirin, ibuprofen or any herbal medications. Another would be any dieting supplements, these could also interfere.

3. One week prior it is important not to take drugs, or drink alcohol. As these could again cause complications during your surgery. Make sure you consult your doctor or nurse with any arising symptoms before you take medication.

4. The days leading up are also important, you want to make sure you are drinking lots of water, eating healthy and staying healthy as well. The day before you want to make sure you eat or drink anytime before the last 6 hours prior to your surgery. Make sure you get a good nights sleep, and your transportation is all set.

With all the excitement for your surgery, you want to make sure you do everything you need to do to ensure it is as successful as possible.
LiftMd will do their part, now all you have to do is yours!

LMMooZYqoRureCdhasP2cgoW9T8SYxcJ-VyaqrgtjzQOranges 2

With the winter season already winding down our skin is needing a little help to get from dry to fresh, and summer ready. The Vitamin C Serum is our recommendation for the best way to get your skin back to normal. The benefits from this serum come down to its main power of the most important vitamin, Vitamin C.

Vitamin C is important to have in your regular diet, the benefits include:
-Combating stress
-Helps support your immune system
-Its anti-aging effect on your skin
-Overall health improvement
So it is especially reassuring that you can get your daily dose in several different ways! One of them being by simply having an orange a day. Another is the use of multi vitamins to support your overall health. Or of course our Vitamin C Serum to specifically freshen up your skin and get it back to its bright and youthful look. This is accomplished through H20 and the vitamin itself, the best ingredients to nourish your face and neck.

While there will continue to be a few cloudy days, its never too early to start the process of replenishing your skin. So make sure you stop by soon or get your orders in, because the sooner you start, the more amazing your face will look. Especially when you are lounging on the beach on a hot summer day.

And don’t forget that orange!

3.  One of the biggest predicted plastic surgery trends in 2015 will be the blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift.  This surgery is amongst the most popular because the eyelid area is often one of the first areas to show signs of aging.  This surgery will take years off one’s face and there are minimal risks and side effects.
